CAST will offer several field trips. BEG's Beverly Blakeney DeJarnett will lead the field trip:
FT 102, "Rocks Don’t Lie: The Importance of Geology in the Petroleum Industry," on Oct. 27.
"Come hold a part of a petroleum reservoir from miles below the surface in your hand! Learn how these rocks are brought to the
surface as cores and see firsthand the stories, knowledge, and insight that these cores provide about the layers far beneath our
feet. Learn how geologists use the observation made from these rocks to predict where undiscovered accumulations of oil and
gas might be found. We will also examine the same rocks microscopically to see how the fossils and mineralogic make-up of the
rocks can have a huge impact on how (or if!) oil and gas can be produced. The Houston Research Center contains a portion of the
largest core collection in the world and only recently has been made available to the public. The core collection (or a library of
rocks) is maintained by the Bureau of Economic Geology affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin. The key points of this
unique opportunity are to understand what a core is and why cores are so valuable that oil companies have spent billions of
dollars collecting them for the information they contain. Participants should wear comfortable shoes."
CAST will offer several workshops. Scott Rodgers and Sigrid Clift of the Bureau of Economic Geology will present the workshop:
"Teaching Geoscience Concepts with DVD Media: Texas, the Underground Story." This workshop will present a geologic history of Texas Gulf Coast with 3D animation visualizing the paleogeographic changes and major geologic events. Classroom use with TEKS-aligned will be demonstrated. DVD included. It will be held Friday at 2:15 PM in the Reliant 609.
