Jackson School of Geosciences Awards

May 9, 2006

On May 9, 2006, the Jackson School of Geosciences held a luncheon where awards were presented to student and staff members of the school. Various awards were presented including years of service awards, student service award, technical sessions best speaker awards, and more. Below are listed the UTIG staff and students who received awards.

Joseph C. Walter Jr. Excellence Award
This award was provided for in an endowment created by Mr. J. C. Walter, Jr. and approved by the Board of Regents in 1977. It was originally titled the Houston Oil and Gas Corporation Excellence Award and was designed to provide annual awards to faculty “in recognition of outstanding service and special contributions to teaching and research programs.” With the creation of the Jackson School of Geosciences, and with the thorough endorsement of Mr. J. C. Walter III, the award has been renamed the Joseph C. Walter Jr. Excellence Award and is now extended School-wide.

UTIG's Senior Research Scientist, Paul Mann, is one of the recipients of this award for 2006. He received his PhD from the State University of New York at Albany and joined the Institute in 1983 (23 years). Paul's interests are in integrated geophysical studies of strike-slip and subduction margins in the Caribbean and SW Pacific.
