Teacher Training

Huston-Tillotson University, a minority serving institution in Austin, and UTIG are collaborating to provide instruction to pre-service and in-service Austin-area minority-serving in-service teachers using materials developed with NSF support for Geology, Meteorology and Oceanography (GMO), a Texas high school Earth science course, and professional development. The National Science Foundation is funding the project though the Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences program. The Jackson School has provided a matching grant to support the effort.

The focus of the teacher training is a semester-long “special topics” course (outline attached) to expose students to a variety of contemporary topics in the geosciences and provide them with curriculum materials previously designed for professional development for high school science teachers with prior NSF support. The will feature special guest lectures by speakers from the U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP) for the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program, the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS)/Seismological Society of America (SSA) Distinguished Lecture Series and the Jackson School of Geosciences.

Please contact Kathy Ellins (kellins@ig.utexas.edu) or Muchere Russ (MCRuss@htu.edu) for additional information.
