UTIG is one of five laboratories at UT Austin that participates in this apprenticeship program to provide recent high school graduates with hands-on experience in a stimulating research environment. Each summer since 1992, UTIG has hosted four students as part of this initiative. All the UTIG summer apprentices have gone on to careers in the science or engineering.
Former apprentices include:
| Linda Al-Alawy | Amy Drozd | Suzanne Oliason |
| Jennifer Almaraz | Bisola Falola | Julia Pietrasik |
| Laura Anderson | Effie L. Jarrett | Corrin Polvado |
| Stephanie B. Arevalo | Jeff McCarty | Corrin Polvado |
| Amy Barr | Allison Mielke | Shirley Truong |
| Brian Bibeault | Megan Mitchell | Ernesto Vazquez |
| Jennifer Doebbler | Amy Norman | Ben Williams |
