John Gerboc, Systems Analyst

As a systems analyst, John works with both computer hardware and software. He often goes into the field to help with various projects. Below are more details on what he does.

Instrumentation
Experience with UTIG Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) maintenance, repair.
   configuration, deployment and recovery.

Labview instrument programming
   Radar antenna resonance measurement
   Various Temperature / Voltage logging
   Real-time chasis setup (Artic radar)
   I'm currently in the process of installing a robotic paleomag sample handler

Instrumentation Various :
   experience with "hobo" temperature loggers,
   wireless temperature loggers
   Webcam monitoring of remote deep cycle battery charge / discharge measurements
   Experience with multi-meters, scopes, signal generators.
   Experience in NOAA weather fax receiver setup and running (for airborne operations)
   Experience in "C" band satellite dish aiming and internet comms maintenance (Antarctic)

Software
Custom software
   Extensive experience in C, Borne, sed, Awk shell scripting
   Pearl and windows command scripting to automatically download and distribute daily virus updates.
   Real-time "C" programming for data collection and display
   Fortran Precise location software Y2K conversion
   Fortran SEG-Y header manipulation
   Awk seismic line interpolation and UTM coordinate conversion
   Experience in making custom GPS maps for Garmin GPS receivers for the field

Field Data Archival
   Tape archival of Airborne geophysical data and shipborne seismic data

Field Data QC and QC scripting

Field Safety / Comms
   Experience with Iridium phone use and maintenance
   Experience with Emergency locator beacons
   Have Wilderness First responder training (First Aid)
   Experience with shortwave radio setup and use (Antarctic)
   Have training in emergency snow shelter setup and use (Antarctic)

Field Autonomous instrumentation Setup and maintenance
   Solar / Battery supplied magnetometer base station
   Battery backed GPS base station.
   Various Battery / inverter field setups
   Experience with Battery charging / maintenance
   Experience Reftech remote seismometer setup
