HKT
TOUR:
THE
INSTALLATION
|
Welcome to
the tour documenting the installation of HKT.
During the week of July 17, 1995, a team from the
Albuquerque Seismic Lab (ASL),
assisted by several staff members from the
University Of Texas Institute For Geophysics (UTIG),
installed a state of the art broad-band seismometer at Hockley, Texas.
The new Streckeisen sensors and Quanterra digital data aquisition system
replace an older analog Teledyne Geotech S-13 short period seismometer
installed in 1973 at the same location.
|
|
|
Hockley itself is located about 100 miles east of Austin, just northwest
of the Houston suburbs.
|
The building housing the
mine shaft elevator and processing plant, as seen from the road.
Agriculture and ranching dominate the local economy, and
much of the salt produced from the mine goes into cattle food.
|
|
The seismic instrumentation is located about a ½ kilometer below ground
along the edge of the mined out volume and away from the currently active
section. Satellite communications link the data aquisition system
in the mine with the USNSN at Golden, Colorado and the UTIG
processing computer.
