EARTHQUAKE SEISMOLOGY

longhorn over earth HKT TOUR: SERVICING

Welcome to the virtual tour documenting the 1996 servicing of HKT. During a January 1996 visit, we noticed some problems with the bell jars housing the seismometers. With assistance from the Albuquerque Seismic Lab (ASL), we determined that the seals in the bell jar baseplates were leaking, and that in the near future we would need to replace the baseplates and relevel the instruments. The UTIG staff decided to wait until June 1996 since we would need to relevel the instruments at that time anyway. This virtual tour documents these two visits to the mine and the work on the seismometers.
Checking bell jars: No vacuum
Above: Checking the bell jar pressure periodically is part of the general maintenance of the seismic station. We cut small holes in the inner protective styrofoam boxes so we would not need to expose the bell jar assemblies to any salt dust. At this visit in January 1996, we found that one bell jar had completely lost its vacuum and that the other two were leaking.
